A Hazardous Materials Building Inspection, commonly referred to as an HMBI or hazardous materials survey, identifies hazardous materials that could be disturbed during renovation, demolition, maintenance or restoration work.

The inspection focuses on accessible building materials within the proposed work area. Depending on the property and project scope, the assessment may include asbestos-containing materials, lead-containing coatings, silica, mercury, mould, polychlorinated biphenyls and other potential hazards.
